The Fiji Police Force has interdicted 42 of its officers and suspended 12 from duty while resolving a whopping 521 complaints against police officers.
The 521 complaints investigated range from internal disciplinary breaches, criminal offences, unprofessional conduct, unethical behaviour, complaint against service, marital affairs, and bad debts.
Yesterday a team of investigators from the Discipline and Ethical Division visited the Western Division to commence investigations into 123 cases.
Police Commissioner Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua said he was determined to reduce the number of complaints against officers.
He wants operational effectiveness, improved responsiveness to cases reported from the public and exemplary behaviour from all police officers.
Director Discipline and Ethical Division Senior Superintendent Vakacegu Toduadua said police officers were also accountable to the law.
"We must lead by example. Members of the community look up to police officers and therefore our behaviour must display integrity, fairness, respect, honesty, courage and compassion รน values that we hold dear to our line of work," he said.
"And we will address all these disciplinary issues, and become the force that is responsive to the needs of the community, friendly and trustworthy.
Police have requested members of the public to lodge any complaints at the nearest police stations or through the call centre 132777 or 9905922
