Do not deviate from agreed agenda - RFMF cautions Methodist Church

Security Forces met at the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Queen Elizabeth Barracks at Delainabua on Tuesday 09 August 2011 to caution Methodist Church of Fiji Secretary Reverend Nawadra of the upcoming annual church meet.

The RFMF urged the Methodist Church in Fiji not to deviate from the initial agenda agreed to by the PM upon which he had authorized the convening of their annual church conference. Spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Neumi Leweni said the RFMF had been monitoring the movements of key figures in the church, meetings conducted and information being disseminated.
He added that the approval being granted for the proposed three days conference was based on government’s effort to continue dialogue with the church and ultimately addressing the anomalies within its hierarchy.

The RFMF has been reliably informed that there are elements within the church that had been planning on utilizing the mass that will congregate during the meeting to instigate instability.

“Security is a concern both to the RFMF and Police; it is for this reason yesterday’s meeting was held. Government’s intention is to cancel the meeting should the church deviate from the original agenda,” Lt Colonel Leweni said.

“The RFMF is also very concerned about the apparent opposition of the Church against the Peoples’ Charter and the Roadmap to Democracy and Sustainable Socio-Economic Development, which are Government’s guide to a truly united, modern and peaceful nation.”

The church is reminded that all citizens of this country are now known as Fijians and that is an indication of our determination to unite every race and ethnic groups in Fiji. This is a battle which the PM has embarked on since 2006 and should be supported and treated as a priority by the Methodist church.

The RFMF will continue to scrutinize the activities of the church to ensure that it focuses on its rightful role of developing the spiritual foundation of its members and not to engage in politics.

“The church leadership was so engrossed with politics that it has deviated from its core role. The church should look within and try and identify reasons for the mass exodus of its members to other denominations,” Lt Colonel Leweni said.

The RFMF has reiterated that the law will take its course should a member of the conference engage in any unlawful activities.
