Govt cancels Methodist Church conference | |
Publish date/time: 23/08/2011 [09:25] The Methodist Church of Fiji conference which was scheduled to start today in Suva has been cancelled. Military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Neumi Leweni said he cannot give further details at this stage. It is understood the church executives were supposed to meet with government yesterday afternoon to decide on who will chair the meetings during the conference. However, Assistant General Secretary Reverend Tevita Nawadra said no government official turned up so the executives went ahead and decided that President Reverand Ame Tugawe was to chair the meeting. Lieutenant Colonel Leweni had earlier made it clear that the church’s current President Reverend Ame Tugaue, General Secretary Reverend Tuikilakila Waqairatu and executive Reverend Manasa Lasaro are not allowed to chair any of the meetings during the conference. Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama who had earlier agreed to give the permit for the conference is expected to make a statement later today. Story by: Sofaia Koroitanoa and Tokasa Rainima |
