Students - Remember those Drills

School mock tsunami drill operation

The Ministry of Education with the assistance of eight friendly forces will stage a mock Tsunami drill operation involving six schools today.

Minister of Education Mr Filipe Bole says the purpose of the drill is to review the response and coordination procedures of a tsunami evacuation for six schools situated along the Suva peninsula.

“I commend the efforts of organisations involved in this operation. We have seen the reaction of the public in previous Tsunami alerts and we can be thankful that our people are taking the initiative to come up with something like this to mentally prepare our children in schools along the coast in Suva,” Mr Bole said.

“Hopefully, other schools on the islands can have their own evacuation plans and drills for the similar reason.”

The six schools are: Draiba Primary School, Veiuto Primary School, Suva Grammar School, Cathedral Secondary School, Stella Marist Primary and Corpus Christi Teachers College.

The friendly forces include the Police, National Fire Authority, Fiji Military Forces, Save the Children Fiji, SOPAC, St John’s Ambulance and the Ministry of Health.

The drill will begin at 2pm.

Ends…
