AFL Board Chairman - Adrian, Action speaks louder then Promises - Get Pacific Sun Flying asap!

We need access - Hotel owner

One of the biggest hotels in the Friendly North (Vanua Levu) is calling on the Government to look at ways for better transportation links between the Northern Division and the Nadi International Airport.
Savusavu’s Koro Sun Resort and Spa owner, Jack Young is hoping that Government would improve infrastructure in the Northern Division to aid their quest in getting their share of tourists.

“We have been having problems with access for the tourists who want to come over but we keep losing them because of the flight arrangements and the ferry services,” Mr Young said.

“Government has a Look North policy in place and we hope that a little more could be done for the development of Vanua Levu and Taveuni.”

He added that Government should be able to talk with companies in getting bigger aircrafts to fly to Vanua Levu and Taveuni.

“We would really appreciate if we have a bigger runway and bigger plans. There had been some talks but we hope to see a little bit more done for that side,” Mr Young said.

Jean-Michel Cousteau’s marketing and sales director, Christine McCann uttered similar sentiments.

“If we could turn the Savusavu or Labasa airport like the Nausori airport, we could be right on top,” Ms McCann said.

“I’m saying this because it’s a totally new Fiji in that part of the country and it is experiencing the real Fiji.”

Tourism Fiji’s chief executive officer Josefa Tuamoto says the issue of transportation has been there for some time.

“Government is working on its plans. We feel for our friends in Vanua Levu and Taveuni and we all know that once something is done about it we could get even more numbers,” Mr Tuamoto said.

Airports Fiji Limited (AFL) board chairman Adrian Sofield said access for tourists should be a thing of the past as Pacific Sun is looking to increase flights to not only Savusavu and Taveuni but the whole of Vanua Levu.

“The runway had been increased last year but access for tourists have been discussed and Pacific sun is looking at increasing flights to Vanua levu and Taveuni.”

Savusavu airport will become the first airport in the country to have its terminal designed to depict the unique Fijian culture and tradition.

Airports Fiji Limited Board Chairman Adrian Sofield said that the new design is in line with AFL’s decision to have all airports portray Fiji’s multi cultural heritage as a requirement.

He said the plans are currently in its preliminary stages and work on the new look terminal will begin next year.

He said they are looking for specifically local architects to design the terminal.

AFL has set aside $0.8 million for the works and Sofield hopes work will complete by the end of 2012.
