E-Ticketing System for Buses - The way to Go for Fiji!

PM to launch e-ticketing system

PRIME Minister Voreqe Bainimarama will launch the electronic fare ticketing system for the Central and Eastern Division tomorrow.

He will start the journey at Sukuna Park where he will board a bus to depart for Adi Cakobau School at 7am.

The e-ticketing system is going to help capture the $5million, as per a review of Fiji Bus industry in 2009, which leaks out of the revenue of bus
operators.

These leakages stem from activities such as thefts, fraud and mishandling of bus revenue.

As recommended by the review, the e-ticketing system would eliminate bus drivers from handling the cash directly.

The technology, which is already being used overseas, will see the installation of the machine.

The supplier of the machine is Telecom Fiji Limited, which has won the tender to be the supplier for the next five years.

Each bus is required to install a console for e-ticket machines and these consoles can either be hired for $1.50 per day or purchased for $800.

The travelling public that uses the bus service has to purchase a smart card or prepaid ticket from any TFL outlets in Fiji or their nominated retail vendors.

The bus operators will then be able to collect their revenue from the TFL outlets and this also enables Government to keep track of the income of these bus companies thus assisting in the revenue collection process.

After the introduction in the Central and Eastern Division, the new system will proceed to the Western and Northern Divisions.

Five school from Nausori -Waila corridor will pioneer the system. These five schools are Adi Cakobau School; Rambisessar Chaudhary Memorial School; Saraswati Primary Dilkulsha School; Tacirua Bhartiya Pathsala Primary School; Saraswati College.

School students have also received training on how to utilise the e-ticketing mode of payment and so will the travelling public as the system will roll out by the end of 2012.

Training sessions have also been held for the bus companies, especially the drivers.
