SEA Speed Limit Out - First for Fiji

Govt warns on speed limits at Denarau Channel

Vessel owners that frequently use the Denarau channel for their operations are advised to take heed of the speed limitations of below four knots and adhere to precautionary measures while using the channel.
Dredging works currently undertaken at Denarau channel by Hall Contracting PTY Limited, who have also commenced pumping and piling on the newly constructed dump site, have had their work impeded when vessels continue to travel at high speed in and out of the channel causing unstable movement of the dredging equipment and making dredging work difficult.
The Ministry of Works Transport and Public Utilities strongly advises against vessel owners operating at high speed in the channel as this is a breach of maritime safety measures.
Vessel owners that fail to comply with these speed limitations will be taken to task.
The ministry has called on the Police Border Control Unit for their assistance in disseminating this safety message to the vessel owners.
Ministry officials are meeting with Denarau vessel owners today to discuss and reiterate Government’s stand on the issue.
