Mahogany requires a long term continuous replanting program and plan

Fiji has world’s largest mahogany plantation

Fiji has the largest mahogany plantation in the world.
Public Enterprise Ministry Permanent Secretary Elizabeth Powell told FBC News Fiji's mahogany needs to be protected for our future generations.

“The largest plantation of mahogany in the world is in Fiji so we have legally grown the Mahogany in our country that is able to fetch premium pricing what we are doing is completely updating the branding and establishing the branding of the mahogany so it does qualify for this premium pricing.”

Powell adds they have introduced a mahogany replanting program as sustainability is important.

“In 2009 there was practically none, no replanting done at all and last year there was around 430 - 435 hectares replanted, this year alone around 666 hectares in total and we are targeting about 1,000 hectares by year end.”
She says those carrying out the replanting have a huge responsibility and should not falter.
